What I want: A book I can't put down. Characters I can fall in love with on page one. Emotion, drama, humor, excitement...the same things you want in a book.
Move me. Then tell me where you see your book in the publishing world. Did you target a market? Please say you targeted a market.
Write something wonderful, and I'll take it, honest.
My favorite genres: thrillers, romance, mysteries, and mild sci-fi. The same genres for YA books. I enjoy memoirs and true crime. No children's picture books.
What I don't want: Kudos from other writers, platform books, episodic romps, vampire books, wizard school books. Do not praise your own material, or me as an agent. Know this one thing about me: I really, really want to represent great writers. I live to find that jewel in the slush pile. I hope it's yours. Please call me Joyce when you write. I am not the enemy.

Herblore with Agnes Jayne
Are you looking for money? A little basil might help you with that. It might also bring you luck, love, and even rid your home of hostile spirits.
Do you need some good luck? Try putting an acorn in your pocket.
Perhaps it's love that you want – Gardenia might help you with that. So might cinnamon, lavender, rosemary, and a variety of other herbs that you may have sitting in your spice cabinet right now.
Herblore is a tradition that stretches back for centuries, and its study is a virtual treasure trove for writers of paranormal fiction. As writers of the fantastic, we are constantly searching for new knowledge to authenticate and create interest in our characters. Many of the characters in my novel, The Problem with Power, are of the witchy variety, and the study of this age-old magical tradition was central to the development of my characters, and I daresay that you might find it to be of value as well.
Agnes Jayne is the author of The Problem with Power, a debut novel released by Crescent Moon Press. She is also a college-level instructor of Writing and Literature. Her interests lie in British Literature, folklore, and the study of herbs. She lives high in the Blue Ridge Mountains of West Virginia with her husband, son, and a plethora of adopted pets.

KING ARTHUR - FACT VS FICTION with Suzanne Shanken
Did King Arthur really exist? Were there really Knights in shining armor? Why are all the women in Arthurian tales depicted as villains? The legend of King Author is one of the most controversial topics in the world of history. The plots, adventures, and lives of Arthurian characters are teeming with inaccurate facts and medieval political propaganda that lead most modern Arthurian fans to believe the fictional tomes of novelists writing 700 years after King Arthur allegedly lived.
Suzanne Shanken received a university scholarship by winning a short story contest and earned bachelor degrees in both British Archeology and Ancient Religions. Her love of writing found a home in the university newspaper and while student teaching creative writing classes. Suzanne studied Arthurian legends extensively. Her goal was to write tales where the Arthurian women are heroes, not villains. She achieved this goal after the publication of her book "The False Gwenevere" in 2012.
OCT 10
The Tension In Your Novel with Cindi Madsen
This workshop will pit fact against fiction and reveal the truth about those wonderful Arthurian tales that continue to fascinate hundreds of people worldwide.

She is currently working on another Arthurian romance with Morgana le Fey as the heroine.

Research—How It Can Be More Inspiration than Perspiration with Kate Lutter
Research--that dreaded 8 letter word. For some writers, it becomes a trap they fall into where they can’t stop and begin to write. For some it’s the journey they can’t start because they feel too overwhelmed. Take a breath and drop by to hear some new ideas on how and where modern writers find not just information but inspiration for their stories.

A novel in 30 days with Kate Evangeslista
Write a novel in thirty days by writing a chapter a day. The first of the month is the first chapter and so on until by the end of the month, a novel is born. No outlining, just letting the story flow where it wants to go.
When Kate Evangelista was told she had a knack for writing stories, she did the next best thing: entered medical school. After realizing she wasn't going to be the next Doogie Howser, M.D., Kate wandered into the Literature department of her university and never looked back. Today, she is in possession of a piece of paper that says to the world she owns a Literature degree. To make matters worse, she took Master's courses in creative writing. In the end, she realized to be a writer, none of what she had mattered. What really mattered? Writing. Plain and simple, honest to God, sitting in front of her computer, writing. Today, she has four completed Young Adult novels.

Creating Your Fantasy World with Marne Ann Kirk
So, you're writing a fantasy, set on Milonia? Cool. What kind of currency do they use? What do your characters eat? What is the social make-up and how did it help form your characters' beliefs? If you haven't considered these questions, perhaps this class will help you create a better developed world for your characters to play in. We'll discuss what considerations are vital when world building and some of the pitfalls authors tend to get stuck in. So join me and let's discuss world building!
Marne Ann Kirk grew up wild, exploring the vast high deserts and mountains of the West with her family as a child. Marne Ann loved making up stories and, well, lied about just about everything. Thankfully, she grew out of the lying stage...now she calls it story-telling. She lives with her husband in Western Colorado, where they enjoy their children, grand-children, and too many Shih-Tzu beasties. She hopes you enjoy her novels, Love Chosen and Goddess on the Run. mythology and fairy tales as a basis for new stories with Sasha Summers
Sasha is part gypsy. Her passions have always been storytelling, history, and travel. It's no surprise that her books visit times past, set in places rich with legends and myth. Her first play, 'Greek Gods and Goddesses' (original title, right?), was written for her Girl Scout troupe. She's been writing ever since. She loves getting lost in the worlds and characters she creates; even if she frequently forgets to run the dishwasher or wash socks when she's doing so. Luckily, her four brilliant children and hero-inspiring hubby are super understanding and supportive.

Made to Order: The perfect recipe for great characters that your readers will eat up with Jean Murray
Are agents or editors not connecting with your characters? Do your characters feel flat or one dimensional? Need a quick fix? Well, you may have been following the wrong recipe. Make your readers, agents and editors hungry for more.
Jean Murray was born and raised in a small town on the east coast. In her pursuit of a nursing degree, she aspired to see the world and joined the Navy. "Why Middle Grade?" with Emma Eden Ramos
This past March, The New York Times published an article titled "Your Brain on Fiction." "Stories," Annie Murphy Paul wrote, "stimulate the brain and even change how we act in life." In this day and age, as a result of advanced technology, we are constantly being bombarded with information, opinions and advertisements. Even as adults, we can find it difficult to weed out the good from the bad, the harmful from the potentially helpful. For young people, however, learning to make these distinctions can be a matter of life and death, success and failure. While it may not be the answer, there is no doubt that fiction, with its relatable characters, can play an enormous role in shaping a child's understanding of the world. In this workshop, we will look at the components of a middle grade story. How do they differ from those of YA and adult fiction? We will discuss the importance of character growth and maturity. Is it absolutely crucial that an MG character learn at least one significant life lesson? If so, why? And, lastly, we will explore what it takes to develop a relatable protagonist that young teens can turn to.

How to Write a Story, Not Just 50K, in 30 Days with Jean Viola Ryan
It's almost that time again, folks. National Novel Writing Month is a great idea, but like many great ideas, it require preparation. In this weeklong workshop, you will start that preparation. First you will learn to find your emotional connection to your writing, because without that, 1. writing 50K becomes a chore and 2. because if you don't have it, neither will your reader. After this, you will come up with story sentences, something to help keep you focused for 30 days so your book becomes a story, rather than 50K. You will work on some very loose plotting and brainstorm a few candy bar scenes you can write when writers block strikes.
Jean Viola Ryan's debut novel, The Mark of Abel, was a 2007 National Novel Writing Month winner. That was back before she took a single workshop or read any books on writing. After spending several years revising that monstrosity, she decided that she didn't want to be a panstser any more and took every workshop she could find about plotting. This workshop will incorporate several tricks she picked up.

Knock Your Block Off! with Jane Bernard
CONTENT: Writer’s Block
What is it?
How to recognize it,
Who gets it?
What does it mean?
Why does it happen?
Beating it.
Writer’s block is the experience of feeling boredom, resentment, frightened, or confused, when you sit down to write. It happens to everyone and there is nothing pleasant about it. Still it is part of writing. The goal of this course is to help writers to recognize their writing process and writer’s block.
I will give the students a few provocative questions about their writing experiences relating to writer’s block, and then do a 1-hour workshop answering questions.
I will talk about how to beat writer’s block by understanding how to get around it psychologically. This course is designed for opening up the blocked writer.
Mostly I want to help people with getting the results they're seeking. The 1-hour workshop will be devoted to this. Bring questions about your writing process for me to address.
A copy of my e-book, Knock Your Block Off! which addresses writer's block. It can be downloaded for free with code # QY88R through Smashwords.com
This is different from “Fine Tuning The Senses” which focuses on using the 6 senses to help people break through the ice to begin and continue the creative process.

Award-winning author Ginger Hanson writes contemporary and historical romance novels, as well as essays and short stories. Her contemporary romance series is set in the fictional town of Tassanoxie, AL, a small town full of second chances. Fall in love with the town and its characters in Feather’s Last Dance, Ellie’s Song and A Christmas Diamond for Merry.
Enjoy historical adventure romance? Try Lady Runaway, Ginger’s recent venture into the Regency era and her third historical romance. Two Civil War adventure romances lurk on her backlist. And if you want to learn what it’s like to write a historical romance as a first book, read Ginger’s entertaining article, “Quest for Vengeance” in the Twilight Times Books anthology How I Wrote My First Book.
A workshop presenter at writers' conferences, Ginger also gives programs for clubs, schools, and libraries. In her nonfiction past, she worked as a “clean up” writer and copyeditor of FAA handbooks, wrote a lot of newsletters and served a stint as a humor columnist for a small town newspaper. When not writing, Ginger volunteers with the Friends of the Library and practices Tai Chi to maintain her sanity.

Submission Packet Throes with Lisa Lickel
Ready to submit your baby for publication or agent representation?
You mean, like, there are rules to this game?
Yes, Virginia, there are a lot of rules to getting published, and this week we’ll analyze the general intent of them. From the very basics about finding the right editor/publisher or agent to what all those scary terms like synopsis, writer’s credentials or market analysis to the most basic difference between cover and query letter, we’ll tackle them all. Questions and Answers are good; doing the brief homework that involves researching and analyzing the web sites of possible publishers and agents and reporting back is helpful. A chat is available. The content of this workshop is geared for beginners, but anyone can brush up and contribute advice and experience to others.

Writing 101 with Mary Andrews
A seven day forum which will explore a subject a day:
Monday--Facing the blank page
Tuesday--Plotting techniques
Wednesday--Character & World Developement
Thursday--Point of View
Friday--Passive Writing vs Active
Saturday--How to 'Show, don't tell'
Sunday--Self Editing techniques
Mary Andrews writes science fiction—Psionic Science Fiction—which encompasses the inevitable fusion of man, machine, and the paranormal.
For over two decades Mary has sought out and studied writing from too many mentors to list. She is an unconventional thinker who thrives ‘out of the box.’ Her favorite question is: WHY, since that answer, enables all solutions. She claims little fear of change: in fact, she has adventured through multiple career choices, testing many waters and distant horizons before finally realizing a love for writing.
Currently the director of the Write Right Critique Group in Lubbock, Texas, Mary continues to follow her muse, or rather, document its whereabouts, from a recreational past through the Society for Creative Anachronisms to the barely unfolding universes in her mind.
She heartily invites one and all to visit her website’s writer’s resources page as well as read samples of her work at http://FirebornChronicles.com
